The Goose Story Teamwork Lesson

The Goose Story â€" Teamwork Lesson When you see geese flying along in V formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone â€" and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are. When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with gees e flying south. Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What messages do we give when we honk from behind? Finally â€" and this is important â€" when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.Author Unknown

sweatshops in china Essays - Labor, Anti-corporate Activism

Sweatshops in China and Across the World Sweatshops are work environments that possess three major characteristics; long hours, low pay and unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. Sweatshops have been a factor in the production of goods across the world for centuries, but globalization of major corporations has led many businesses to take advantage of low paying sweatshop labor in developing countries. Sweatshops exist everywhere there is an opportunity to exploit workers who lack the knowledge and resources to stand up for themselves. Typical sweatshop employees are young and uneducated. Workers around the world are subject to horrible working conditions and innumerable injustices because corporations, many which are U.S. owned, can get away with it. The resurgence of the sweatshop can be directly linked to the expansion of corporate globalization. The sweatshop is both metaphor for and proof of the lawlessness and inequities of the new global economy. Every new sweatshop expos? raises new doubts about who corporate globalization is really benefiting. e Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) will drastically accelerate corporate globalization in the Americas, giving more power to multinational corporations at the expense of ordinary citizens. This will likely spread sweatshop-style production to more countries. As dog-eat-dog competition among countries increases, workers will likely see their already-low wages drop even further and their already-assaulted rights face even more threats. The United States has had a long and prosperous relationship with China in trade and economics. However one aspect of the Chinese economy that has human rights activists screaming is the sweatshops in China. Most Chinese sweatshops are American companies such as GAP or Nike who have set up factories that are low paying and dangerous to workers. There are several hundred sweatshops in China where clothing, toys, electronics or various other goods are being produced. Chinese laws are not being enforced and have led companies to get away with human rights violations. Part of the reason is the labor surplus. China?s population is over 1 billion people and they are all looking for work, so they turn to factories which are heavily underpaid. The factories are crowed, filthy and rat-infested. Factory conditions are dangerous and basic health and safety protections are rarely provided to workers. The air is stuffy, with little ventilation from the smoke the machines give out. At the end of 2005, China recorded 665,043 cases of disease or illness, such as silicosis- a lung cancer disease, caused by workplace conditions. Most factories are located behind barbed wire fences monitored by armed guards. Many of these factories often pay less than 13 cents per hour, require their workers to work long hours and sometimes prevent workers to leave. On average laborers work 12 hour days, 26 days a month and earn $85 for the month. Factories sometimes do not pay their workers on time if at all. The workers have no choice to continue to work because sweatshops managers threaten and punish them for insubordination. Sweatshops often employ young children under the age of twelve. Women are primarily employed in sweatshops. Common abuses are sexual assault and under the threat of corporal punishment. They are verbally abused, spat on and beaten. Women are not allowed to leave their line for bathroom breaks. In some Indonesian sweatshops, women are forced to pull down their pants and reveal to factory doctors they are menstruating in order to claim their legal right to menstrual-leave. The inexperienced women and children who works in the factories are not taught properly how to operate heavy m achinery and sometimes explode or fall apart and badly injury the workers. Many U.S. retailers have ties to sweatshops, which are usually foreign owned and operated. Nike moved production out of the United States to Taiwan and South Korea when workers demanded better wages. When democracy took hold in those regions, Nike moved its factories to Indonesia, Vietnam and China. Continuous violations of human rights and health and safety standards are an issue. Workers are paid $2.00 per day and are forced to work with toxic glue and chemicals without adequate training, masks and gloves. The Gap produces clothing in six factories in Saipan. Indentured servitude, physical abuse and threats, unsafe working conditions are among the violations in those

Analysis of Del the Funky Homosapien Followers essays

Analysis of Del the Funky Homosapien Followers essays In this vast genre of rap I have looked past the booty chatter and pointlessly obscene to the artist named Del the Funky Homosapien. His song Followers funky upbeat track is song about one of his favorite topics to preach about, originality. He disapproves of people not being original and believes that every one should be a leader of their own. This can be clearly seen in the second line of the chorus, No power over themselves, blindness in this line Del is basically saying that people who follow others blindly have never truly experienced the world for their own. He is saying that people need to be more responsible and make their own decisions. In the third line of the chorus, Dont take it as a diss, take it as an act of kindness Del is saying that he is trying to make fun of people, he is more or less doing them the favor to tell them they are mindless. You cant really get a feel for the song though by reading lyrics, it has to be heard. The track has a strong doubled beat that stays with it throughout the song to give it a sturdy backbone. A funky simplistic guitar sample and a trumpet sound repeat a lot throughout the song, these two sounds are kind of ambient in that they dont detract from what Del is saying but provide melodic reinforcement. The bass line is heavy and descending, if you really want to look for symbolism you could say it represents the people he talks about. The point of this song is that people should be original and not listen to others, that is when I pushed stop rolled down my window and threw the cd out of my window, I didnt need him telling me how to live my life. ...

mbar to atm - Converting Millibars to Atmospheres

mbar to atm - Converting Millibars to Atmospheres This example problem demonstrates how to convert the pressure units millibar (mbar) to atmospheres (atm). Atmosphere originally was a unit related to the air pressure at sea level. It was later defined as 1.01325 x 105 pascals. A bar is a pressure unit defined as 100 kilopascals and 1 millibar is 1/1000 bar. Combining these factors gives a conversion factor of 1 atm 1013.25 mbar. Key Takeaways: Millibars to Atmospheres Pressure Conversion Millibars (mbar) and atmospheres (atm) are two common units of pressure. You can use either of two conversion formulas to convert between millibars and atmospheres.1 millibar 9.869x10-4 atm1 atm 1013.25 mbarRemember, the number in mbar will be about a thousand times larger than the equivalent value in atm. Alternatively, converting from mbar to atm will yield a number about a thousand times smaller. When performing unit conversions, check your answer to make sure it makes sense, convert it to scientific notation if practical, and use the same number of significant digits as the original value. mbar to atm Conversion Problem #1 The air pressure outside a cruising jetliner is approximately 230 mbar. What is this pressure in atmospheres? Solution: 1 atm 1013.25 mbarSet up the conversion so the desired unit will be canceled out. In this case, we want atm to be the remaining unit.pressure in atm (pressure in mbar) x (1 atm/1013.25 mbar)pressure in atm (230/1013.25) atmpressure in atm 0.227 atmAnswer: The air pressure at cruising altitude is 0.227 atm. mbar to atm Conversion Problem #2 A gauge reads 4500 mbar. Convert this pressure into atm. Solution: Again, use the conversion: 1 atm 1013.25 mbar Set up the equation to cancel out the mbar units, leaving atm: pressure in atm (pressure in mbar) x (1 atm/1013.25 mbar)pressure in atm (4500/1013.25) atmpressure 4.44 atm mbar to atm Conversion Problem #3 Of course, you can use the millibar to atmosphere conversion, too: 1 mbar 0.000986923267 atm This may also be written using scientific notation: 1 mbar 9.869 x 10-4 atm Convert 3.98 x 105 mbar into atm. Solution: Set up the problem to cancel out the millibar units, leaving the answer in atmospheres: pressure in atm pressure in mbar x 9.869 x 10-4 atm/mbarpressure in atm 3.98 x 105  mbar x 9.869 x 10-4 atm/mbarpressure in atm 3.9279 x 102 atmpressure in atm 39.28 atm or pressure in atm pressure in mbar x 0.000986923267  atm/mbarpressure in atm 398000 x 0.000986923267 atm/mbarpressure in atm 39.28 atm Need to work the conversion the other way? Here is how to convert atm to mbar About Pressure Conversions Pressure unit conversions are one of the most common types of conversions because barometers (the instruments used to measure pressure) use any of a number of units, depending on their country of manufacture, the  method used to measure pressure, and intended use. Beside mbar and atm, units you may encounter include torr (1/760 atm), millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), centimeters of water (cm H2O), bars, foot sea water (FSW), meter sea water (MSW), Pascal (Pa), newtons per square meter (which is also a Pascal), hectopascal (hPa), ounce-force, pound-force, and pounds per square inch (PSI). A system that is under pressure has the ability to do work, so another way to express pressure is in terms of stored potential energy per unit volume. Thus, there are also units of pressure relating to energy density, such as joules per cubic meter. The formula for pressure is force per area: P F/A where P is pressure, F is force, and A is area. Pressure is a scalar quantity, meaning it has a magnitude, but not a direction. Make Your Own Homemade Barometer Sources Giancoli, Douglas G. (2004). Physics: principles with applications. The overall approach of the author towards gun control is sane and logical as he mentions that, â€Å"I’ve seen how dev astating Gun violence can be (Elvin 1).† Irrespective of the fact that the author in a way happens to be the firsthand victim of gun violence, as his sister got shot by her husband with a gun procured online and without succumbing to any background checks, the reason extended by the author is also based on facts and commonsense. The author believes that the online sale of guns is fraught with dangerous possibilities, as he goes on to cite the conclusion arrived at by a report that, â€Å"every year tens of thousands of criminals and domestic abusers like Radcliffe are looking for guns on Armslist.com, where they can easily buy weapons from private sellers without a background check (Elvin 1).† The overall purpose of the author is to move the public opinion in support of the fact that the online sale of guns must come within the ambit of background checks. Going by the fact that the writer’s sister herself got killed by a gun procured online without any background checks, the opinion expressed by the author happens to be utterly valid, credible and reliable. The thing is that the author is no way against guns as he acknowledges that, â€Å"I’m a gun owner, a hunter, and a member of the National Rifle Association (Elvin 1).† However, the writer staunchly supports a responsible attitude towards arms that no way opposes or decries a background check while purchasing arms at any online portal. The writer intends to target a range of readers subscribing to Politico. The writer is targeting the common citizens, many of whom end up being victims of the gun violence on a daily basis. The writer may also be targeting the anti gun control organizations like the National Rifle Association, encouraging them to support a reasonable and midway approach towards gun control. Alternate Energy Automobiles Essay -- Pollution Transportation Papers

Alternate Energy Automobiles â€Å"Of the world’s approximately 650,000,000 motor vehicles, fewer than 1,500,000 are not powered by either gasoline or diesel.† (Bradley 24). This minority of the vehicular population equates to a mere two thousandths of a percent of alternately powered vehicles. Nearly all of these alternately powered vehicles are powered by liquefied petroleum or compressed natural gas. The time to change that for the better is here and we must push our way through the red tape created by automakers so we can finally drive practical low emission cars. It is imperative that we begin driving higher efficiency automobiles because the limited supply of fossil fuels is running low, global warming is becoming a major issue that needs to be reduced, and internal combustion engines pollute too much. The amount of CO and NO are controllable by the use of different emission such as catalytic converters and exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) system. These components were forced upon the â€Å"big-three† automakers in the mid-1970s by the environmental protection agency (EPA). The auto making companies fought all of these new regulations, they even went to the point of threatening to close plants because of the new catalytic converters. The companies never ran into problems nor closed plants, and internal combustion engine (I/C engine or ICE) powered cars are getting more efficient by the year thanks to our EPA‘s regulations. The previous CEO of Ford, Lee Iocca, was caught on Nixon’s secret recording system complaining bitterly about the new regulations calling them â€Å"complete wastes of money† (Motavalli 41). Police and Forensic Science Technician Essay

I am majoring in the criminal justice because I am very interested in many aspects of the field. I have a few career aspirations, although I do not know which one or ones to pursue , I do know that no matter which I choose I will be using a lot of the information gained from my SOSC 102 course within my career choice. I also possess many personal strengths that make me best suited for my career choice. Some of My Future Career Aspirations My number one career aspiration is to become a forensic science technician. I’d like to become a forensic science technician because I love solving problems, and I think outside of the box in situations where most people would think the answer is obvious. The only reason I have other aspirations besides forensics is because forensic science is not one of the careers in high demand at this time; according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics â€Å"Employment of forensic science technicians is expected to grow by 19 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Competition for jobs will be strong because of substantial interest in forensic science. †( http://www. bls. gov/ooh/life-physical-and-social-science/forensic-science-technicians. htm). Another one of my career aspirations is to become a detective. I would love to become a detective because, just like forensic science technicians, they too have to find answers to problems by thinking outside of the box. In order to become a detective I would have to start as a police officer and work my up in the field, but the job outlook for police officers is more promising than that of a forensic science technician at this time. There is an expected 20,300 new jobs to be filled by the year 2018 for Police Identification and Records Officers. Leadership Styles During The Early 1900s - 2132 Words

Leadership has come a long way with earlier studies of trait and behavioral approaches. Since these were highly directive and non-supportive types of leaders, their main objective was to get the job done within the nine to five work day and go home. Although, this was an effective style back in the early 1900s, a lot has changed in terms of the business setting and functionality that many employees were operating back in the early 1900s. Many of the businesses back in the early 1900s consisted of factories, locally run family businesses that leaned towards a bureaucratic organizational system that suited that kind of leadership style. One of the major outcomes from this era was a lack of relationships and high standards of the work environment towards their employees. Overtime, businesses with help of extensive research till this day realized that in order to have better performance from their employees which could lead to increased profits, they must change how they operate within t he organization and deal with their employees. Employees started to strive for more interpersonal style leadership behaviors and improved work settings to thrive and develop as an employee within the organization. Theories such as: LMX, Path-Goal, Transformational, Charismatic, and Servant Leadership were created to help understand and develop leaders for the benefit of their subordinates. These leadership styles are all good in their own way, yet I believe authentic leadership is ultimatelyShow MoreRelatedThe Leadership Structure Of New Zealand Health Care System Essay1736 Words   |  7 PagesThe leadership structure of New Zealand health care system has a slight modification.
